And then there are students like Jemma Hogan who is proud of being the first in her large family to choose medicine as a career, and held three jobs to support herself through her degree. Kimberley Minas, the recipient of the 2015 AMA (WA) Gold Medal, spent time volunteering with NGOs such as Hepatitis WA to further her knowledge and experience in public health and infectious diseases. She also lectured at UWA and worked for a short time at WA’s Communicable Disease Control Directorate. “I worked in the field of epidemiology of infectious diseases, which was an excellent way to bridge my interests in public health and infectious diseases,” said Kimberley. She was presented with the prestigious AMA (WA) Gold Medal by Association

President, Dr Michael Gannon at a prize giving ceremony just a couple of days before graduation. “I have always held a special interest in infectious diseases and public health, these being the fields of interest that lead me to apply to medical school in the first instance,” said Kimberley.
“I plan to work towards a career that integrates these topics, quite likely starting with undertaking physician’s training,” she added. The AMA (WA) wishes Dr Kimberly Minas and all the other 2015 graduates the very best of luck as they embark on their medical journeys. ■
